Tests at the Oosterschelde since 2006 and still free of fouling. The blue panel is a Thorn-D® foil. It is clearly visible that the untreated panel is covered by barnacles.

StatisTest_1Thorn-D® is a patented non-toxic antifouling technology that provides a physical barrier for biofouling. By applying very specific short fibres (‘thorns”) on a surface, the surface becomes prickly and unattractive for fouling organisms to settle.

Thorn-D® has proven to be effective by testing at different locations of the world.

The basic thought behind Thorn-D® is that a combination of prickliness and swaying of Thorn-D® fibers makes the surface unattractive for organisms to settle. To fully understand the mechanism, one has to discern the three different categories of settlement:
